AION 2 opens worldwide on PC on October 5, 2026, free to play on Windows. Whether you are brand new to the series or you last touched the original AION over a decade ago, the first week follows the same arc: get the game installed, lock in a class, pick a side in the faction war, and start treating the sky as a weapon instead of scenery.
Here is that arc, step by step.
Step 1: Install on Steam or PURPLE
Two doors lead into Atreia. Steam is the obvious pick if you keep your library, friends list and playtime in one place. PURPLE, NCSOFT’s own launcher, plugs you straight into the NC account ecosystem — the better call if you already play other NCSOFT titles. Both are free downloads of the same game; our platforms FAQ compares them, including what is and is not confirmed about accounts across the two.
One practical note: the published storage requirement is 100GB. Clear that space before launch day, not during it.
Step 2: Pick one of eight classes
The global build ships with eight classes covering every classic MMO role:
| Role | Classes | Weapons |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Templar | Sword and shield |
| Healer | Cleric | Mace and shield |
| Support | Chanter | Staff |
| Melee DPS | Gladiator, Assassin | Greatsword, daggers |
| Ranged DPS | Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster | Bow, spellbooks |
If you genuinely cannot decide, community consensus from a year of Korean-server play points at Gladiator as the most forgiving starter — greatsword DPS with strong solo sustain — with Templar the pick if you would rather tank. The full breakdown, including the Korea-only ninth class Brawler, is in our class list.
Step 3: Choose your side — Elyos vs Asmodian
The setting is a war between two factions: Elyos and Asmodian, inherited from the original AION. You “ascend as a Daeva” on one side of that war, and the endgame map — the Abyss — is where it overlaps with PvE.
What the faction choice actually locks in at global launch — separate storylines, separate zones, or largely identity and lore — has not been spelled out in full in the official English materials. Pick the people whose look and story you prefer, and confirm the mechanical fine print in game at launch.
Step 4: Spend real time in character creation
NCSOFT describes AION 2’s creator — with more than 200 customization options — as one of the most advanced in the MMO genre, and it deserves an hour of your first day rather than a rushed slider-fest. You will be looking at this character for hundreds of hours. On top of the creator sit countless collectible outfits, mounts and wings, many earned rather than bought. Our character creation guide walks through it, including the Shugo Festival minigames that hand out wings and skins.
Step 5: Learn to fly early — actually learn it
The biggest beginner mistake will be playing AION 2 like a ground MMO. The official tagline is blunt: “The sky is not the limit. It is the battlefield.” The world is 36 times larger than the original AION’s, and it is built vertically — flight here is not a taxi between quest hubs, it is how you fight, explore and impose your will on a zone. Altitude is advantage.
Start practicing from your first session: engage from above, use height to disengage, and think in three dimensions instead of two. Our aerial combat guide breaks the whole system down.
Step 6: Run solo dungeons, then group up
AION 2 launches with 200+ dungeons in three formats: solo instances, 5-player party dungeons and 10-player group dungeons. Early on, the solo format is your friend — a pressure-free way to learn your kit between story beats. When you do group, the shape is familiar: Templar tanks, Cleric heals, Chanter buffs, everyone else damages. The dungeons guide covers party composition and the seasonal layer on top.
Step 7: Plug into the seasonal loop
Past the story, the long game is seasonal challenges, competitive rankings and open-world events, with the Abyss tying PvE into the faction war. Check the seasonal challenge list every week, even casually — in a fresh MMO, the early ranking seasons are the cheapest rewards you will ever earn, before the field gets crowded.
The bottom line
- Install: Steam or PURPLE, free to play, Windows only, 100GB of disk space
- Class: eight at launch — Gladiator if in doubt, Templar to tank, Cleric if you like being loved by strangers
- Faction: Elyos vs Asmodian; exact mechanical differences — confirm in game at launch
- The habit to build: fly early and fight vertically, because verticality is the game’s design axis, not a garnish
- Content ladder: solo dungeons while leveling, then 5-player parties, 10-player group dungeons and seasonal challenges
AION 2 rewards players who treat week one as flight school. The ground is just where you pick up quests.
